How much electricity does an electric samovar use?
An electric samovar’s consumption depends on three things: the heater’s power (watts), how long the heater actually runs, and how much water is in the tank. With the formulas below you can easily calculate your own samovar’s consumption. The numbers on this page are examples chosen to show the calculation; use your own appliance’s rating and the unit price on your electricity bill.
The basic formula
Consumption (kWh) = Power (W) ÷ 1,000 × Time the heater runs (hours)
Cost = Consumption (kWh) × Electricity unit price (per kWh). You can find the unit price, including taxes, on your electricity bill.
Example 1: boiling the water once
The energy needed to heat water comes from physics: Energy (kWh) ≈ Water (litres) × 4.186 × Temperature rise (°C) ÷ 3,600.
Example: raising 4 litres of water from 15 °C to 100 °C needs 4 × 4.186 × 85 ÷ 3,600 ≈ 0.40 kWh. Add about 10–20% for heat losses; in our example that is about 0.45 kWh.
If the example power is 2,000 W, the time is ≈ 0.45 ÷ 2 = 0.22 hours, or about 13–14 minutes. A 1,500 W heater takes longer to heat the same water, but uses almost the same energy.
Example 2: keeping warm (thermostat)
In keep-warm mode the thermostat switches the heater on and off at intervals. Consumption depends on how many minutes in total the heater is on per hour.
Example: if a 2,000 W heater runs for 6 minutes in total per hour (0.1 hours) while keeping warm, consumption is 2 × 0.1 = 0.2 kWh per hour. Keeping it warm for 8 hours a day is 1.6 kWh in this example.
Example 3: daily and monthly cost
An example day: one boil (0.45 kWh) + 8 hours keeping warm (1.6 kWh) ≈ 2.05 kWh.
Taking an example unit price of 3 TRY/kWh for easy maths, the daily cost is ≈ 2.05 × 3 ≈ 6.15 TRY, or ≈ 185 TRY over 30 days. This is only an example; recalculate with the unit price on your own bill and in your own currency.
Ways to use less electricity
- Put only as much water in the tank as you need; every extra litre means extra energy to heat.
- If nobody will drink tea for a long time, switch it off and reboil when needed instead of keeping it warm.
- Descale regularly; a layer of limescale on the heater slows heating.
- Keep the lid closed and avoid using the samovar in a draught.
Frequently asked questions
Does an electric samovar use a lot of electricity?
Consumption depends on power and time: kWh = W ÷ 1,000 × hours. For example, a 2,000 W heater running non-stop for half an hour uses 1 kWh. With a thermostat keeping it warm the heater does not run constantly, so consumption is lower.
How do I calculate the monthly cost of an electric samovar?
Multiply daily consumption (kWh) by the unit price on your bill and by the number of days you use it. Repeat the example on this page with your appliance’s wattage and your own unit price.
Does a higher wattage use more electricity?
The energy needed to bring the same amount of water to the same temperature is almost the same; higher wattage just heats it faster. The difference lies mostly in the current drawn at once and in keep-warm use.
