Electric samovar not heating / tripping the fuse

The two most common electric samovar problems are water that does not heat and the breaker tripping when the samovar is plugged in or running. This page brings together the likely causes and the checks you can safely do as a user.

Safety: unplug the samovar and let it cool before checking anything. Do not open the appliance or replace the heating element or thermostat yourself; for electrical faults contact authorised service or an electrician.

Likely causes if it does not heat

  • No power: the socket, extension lead or breaker may be off. Test the socket with another appliance.
  • Thermostat or control knob: the knob may be in the off/keep-warm position or the thermostat may be faulty.
  • Dry-boil protection triggered: if it was run empty or with very little water, the protection may have cut the heater. Let it cool, fill it with water and follow the reset step in the manual.
  • Limescale: a thick layer of scale on the heater slows heating considerably.
  • Heating element failure: if the element has burnt out, the water will not heat even if the light comes on; it then needs servicing.

Likely causes if it trips the fuse

  • Overload: if powerful appliances such as an oven, heater, washing machine or dishwasher run on the same circuit at the same time, the circuit breaker may trip.
  • Earth leakage: if the element’s insulation is damaged or water has got into the base or plug, the residual-current device (RCD) cuts the circuit. This is a serious safety warning; have it checked before using it again.
  • Damp socket or plug: plugging in with wet hands, water on the worktop or a damp socket can cause leakage current.
  • Extension leads and multi-sockets: thin cables heat up at high power; plug the samovar directly into an earthed wall socket where possible.

Checks you can safely do

  • Plug the samovar directly into an earthed socket in another room and try again.
  • Switch off other powerful appliances on the same circuit while the samovar runs.
  • Make sure the plug, cable and base are dry and undamaged; do not use a crushed or melted cable.
  • Fill the tank with enough water and check for limescale; descale if needed.
  • If the problem continues, stop using it and contact service.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an electric samovar trip the fuse?

The most common causes are several powerful appliances running on the same circuit (overload) and leakage current caused by moisture or damage in the element or plug. If the RCD trips, stop using the samovar and have it checked.

The light is on but my electric samovar does not heat – why?

The thermostat may be stuck in keep-warm, dry-boil protection may have triggered, the heater may be coated with scale, or the element may have failed. If the problem continues after simple checks, contact service.

Can the heating element of an electric samovar be replaced?

On many models the element and thermostat can be replaced as spare parts, but this requires opening the appliance. For your safety, have authorised service or an electrician do it.

Can I use the samovar with an extension lead?

Preferably not. High-power appliances can overheat thin extension leads and multi-sockets; plug the samovar directly into an earthed wall socket.

Does limescale affect heating?

Yes. Scale on the heater makes it harder for heat to pass into the water, lengthens heating time and can increase consumption. Descale the tank regularly with water and vinegar.
